“Virtually waterless” laundry cleaning technology by XEROS

The next generation Eco friendly washing machine which could reduce the water usage by 90 %, this technology is developed by researchers at Leeds University, which is home to one of the UK’s most advanced textile institutes, they have established a company called Xeros Ltd to marked this laundry cleaning technology.

This technology cleans clothes using reusable nylon polymer beads with an inherent polarity that attracts stains. According to them the tiny nylon polymer beads are designed to gently but fully penetrate into a large wash load. Only a small amount of water is required to dampen the garments, loosen stains and create the water vapor that activates the “molecular magic” of the beads. The beads are then tumbled with the clothes, allowing the polarizing properties of polymer to attract and absorb dirt. Once diffused into the bead itself, stains are locked away from the garment, preventing redeposition, after washing completes this beads are automatically removed by the machine, this beads could last for about 100 loads adequate for the six months of average family usage.

Company plans to launch this laundry cleaning technology by 2010

Future Concetp of Wheel just Think

The NASA Tech Briefs Create the Future Design Contest. The 2008 competition is open until October 17.German student Caspar Schmitz has designed a castor with an additional axis that could see your shopping trolleys glide over bumps instead of grinding to an abrupt halt.

Schmitz second entry is a wheelchair design based on the concept of a Transformable Wheel. The idea is that by using a strong but flexible plastic rim supported by a hinged bracket assembly rather than conventional spokes, the round wheel could be transformed into an ellipsoid shape by applying pressure on the handle bar and enable easier navigation of obstacles. We're not sure how this one would work in practice but its a great piece of lateral thinking.

Cheaper backsheet for solar panels by BioSolar

Solar panels are getting costly as photovoltaic modules in solar panels are made of petroleum-based plastics as a protective backing and you know that petrol price are getting higher but this all is going to change as company named BioSolar has developed bio-based back sheet for solar panels according to them it could last for 20-25 years and manufacturing cost is also 25% cheaper than plastic.

The standard solar panel backsheet costs between $0.70 and $1.00 per square foot. BioSolar’s material is currently estimated to reduce manufacturing costs by 25%, and the company believes it possible to reach the 50% mark. The biomaterial can be produced using existing industrial machines, eliminating the need to purchase new manufacturing systems and lowering costs for adopters.BioSolar expects the market for solar panel backsheets to grow from its current value of $300 million to $1 billion by 2010. Kite Generating Electricity

We are flying kites since many years but you must be surprised that modern giant kites can generate electricity. In Netherland scientists of Delft University of Technology has developed a 10-sq meter kite that is tethered to generator which fly's in air and can produce 10 kilowatts of electricity which is sufficient for 10 family homes.
Now they are planning for even bigger project of 50kW which is called Laddemill in which they will fly multiple kits that they claim can produce 100 megawatts which is sufficient for 1,00,000 homes.

Giant web-search company of California which has invested about $10m last year US kite company called Makani who gout first awards in Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal program.

I think every body should encourage this project because it is cheape and eco friendly source of energy than coal and gas moreover free source is free "Wind". If big companies encourage this project our world could be cleaner place. [guardian]

World's First Light powered Motor

Research team at Tokyo institute of technology has developed a motor which entirely runes on light, rather than photovoltaic cells which convert light to electricity this motor has special elastomer whose molecular structure expands or contracts when when light falls on it, this is how this motor can convert light energy directly into the mechanical energy.

Team was working on this project since 2003 when they found that plastic compound containing azobenze can expand in ultraviolet light and regain its original shape in normal visible light since then they had improved very much. They performed the test by rotating a pair of wheels measuring 3 millimeters and 10 millimeters in diameter looped with shape shifting plastic coated 0.08 millimeter belt, when ultraviolet light was shine on small wheels and visible light on small wheel they starts rotating with a top speed of 1 rpm.

The coated film measured 4 times elastic than human muscle, this thing is not very efficient but it can be improved to convert light energy into mechanical energy. [Via: pinktentacle]

Robots That Can Climb Walls

It is really fascinating that Robots can climb the walls that to any surface of walls like glass, brick, steel and wood. This robot is developed by the team in SRI's Mobile Robotics and Transducers Program.

BBC News has reported that this robot can scale surface using the same principles behind electrostatic charges, which make balloons stick to ceiling after being rubbed. Its track are made of elector-adhesive materials, when current is applied the track are attracted to the wall. This robot carries positive and negative charges and when wall sees this charge it automatically generate the opposite charge and attracts tracks to wall.

It is really small and can be controlled by remote. [BBC News]
